CommBank hit by outages again

Commonwealth Bank has suffered its third major outage recent months.

COMMONWEALTH Bank’s systems are back online.

Earlier today thousands of customers around the country unable to access NetBank, EFTPOS, ATMs or phone banking after the bank’s system failed.

The outages began about 2.30pm AEST on Friday and appear to affect merchant terminals as well as online services.

They were restored just after 5pm.

A Commonwealth Bank spokesman told news.com.au all services had been fully restored from approximately 5:05pm. However he was unable to explain what caused the outage.

“We thank our customers for their patience and we are sorry for the inconvenience that has caused,” he added.

Earlier, angry customers took to social media to vent their frustration.

“Tried to use card at check-out but was declined — credit worked though — it was all good this morning,” Twitter user Lynda Grierson wrote.

Michael Bainbridge wrote: “Down again. Looks like June incident but this time NetBank down too. No access through web or app. Hope you all have cash.”

On Facebook, customers complained of being unable to pay for groceries at the check-out. “Just left my trolley full of food at Woolworths. Very embarrassing,” wrote Lyn Woods.

Addy Anderson said: “I have been with you for 30 years. If you continue to make my money inaccessible due to your crappy NetBank and useless app issues I will definitely be changing banks. It’s one week since you left my daughter stranded and now I am stranded unable to pay for my petrol. Furious!”

Earlier this month, many travellers were left stranded with no access to cash when CommBank’s Travel Money card systems collapsed.

Civil-rights icon Julian Bond's enduring, 'invaluable' voice

Former Georgia politician and life-long civil rights activist Julian Bond, who died on Saturday, was known for his dedication to justice and equality.

A poetic, often humorous voice of the American civil rights movement fell silent this weekend as Julian Bond, who advocated for racial equality in the country for almost sixty years, died on Saturday.

An activist from the age of 17, Mr. Bond was part of a generation of African-American leaders that grew with the civil rights movement itself in the 1960s.

“Julian Bond was a hero and, I’m privileged to say, a friend. Justice and equality was a mission that spanned his life,” said US President Barack Obama in a statement. “Julian Bond helped change this country for the better.”

August 16, 1977: Elvis Presley Dies

The myth of the King “allows us to cling to the notion that art is pure and society is corrupt and corrupting.”

One of the surprises of a years-long dive into this magazine’s archives is the realization that The Nation has a long record of having said some remarkably intelligent things about popular culture; this has often been manifested most profoundly in essays on the deaths, typically untimely, of film or music stars. Consider recent Almanac entries on Bob Marley and Marilyn Monroe, each of which managed to describe the history of their subjects’ respective careers in almost world-historical terms.

A classic of the genre is the critic Louis Menand’s essay on Elvis Presley from the Nation of June 5, 1982, just shy of five years after the King’s death on this day in

‘Clash Of Clans': The Story Of A Billion Dollar Gaming Empire

Clash of Clans has been attracting attention not just for its huge popularity with gamers, but for the enormous commercial success makers Supercell have enjoyed. In 2013, Air Herald reported that Clash of Clans contributed to Supercell’s revenue of $892 million (on the back of just two games), and with daily revenue from Clash of Clans now predicted to be over $5 million, one can conclude they have crossed the billion dollar mark some time ago.
It turns out that the secret of Clash of Clans‘ success might be no secret at all. Clash of Clans, instead, is a demonstration of what can be achieved through a combination of smart marketing, consistent testing, and better execution than competitors of tried-and-tested core gameplay elements.

Jenna Bush Hager and husband welcome second daughter, Poppy

Former first daughter turned “Today” show correspondent Jenna Bush Hager and her husband, Henry, on Thursday welcomed their second daughter, Poppy Louise.
The announcement, like everything else about 33 year-old Hager’s pregnancy, saving the actual birth, was made on NBC’s “Today” show.
Host Matt Lauer informed audiences that the baby’s name (though it seems like an on-trend choice) actually has family roots: Her great-grandfather, former president George H.W. Bush, went by the nickname “Poppy” while he was growing up.
It’s the second child for the couple, who wed in 2008; daughter Mila is 2.

Exclusive–Ann Coulter: Donald Trump, Ted Cruz Understand the Immigration Primary

pasted_image_at_2015_08_07_01_24_am

It’s still all the Donald. He was the big man on stage.

They challenged him in that first question about supporting the eventual nominee — whomever it may be — and he was right to refuse. The issues he represents cannot be subordinated to party. One wishes he had hammered the immigration point in that first question, by saying: “Any candidate who doesn’t respond to the threat of uncontrolled immigration cannot represent me.” He’d better understand that’s his signature issue. Other than that, he sounds informed, smart, and presidential. Brilliant on Obamacare. Brilliant on giving money

With her history of alcoholism, disordered eating, family drama, and personal trauma, Richards is the latest reality TV victim to have earned years of ratings success at the price of her wellbeing and sobriety. Her tale is sad enough to draw a tear from even the most rigidly Botoxed real housewives, and speaks to the dark consequences of America’s insatiable demand for raw
